Having a Social Media Platform is good, but it’s only half the way. Now you need to entertain them, by posting content.  

Facebook has been Cambodia’s leading social platform for the past 15 years, with 12 million users by the end of 2023, making up 90% of the country’s active population online. However, the new generation is starting to move away from it, seeing it as their parents’ app!

LinkedIn was initially popular only among western expats in Cambodia. However, since around 2015, more and more recent graduates have joined the platform, aiming to showcase their skills to western companies. Today, about half a million professionals in the country, mostly white-collar workers, have LinkedIn accounts, though only a few are actively using them.
Instagram struggled to gain traction in Cambodia when it first appeared in 2009, largely because smartphones weren’t yet widespread. However, after Meta (then Facebook) acquired the app, it started to gain visibility. Today, with Business Manager allowing simultaneous posting on both Instagram and Facebook, the platform is becoming more prominent.
Twitch, as per the rest of the world, is exclusively reserved for gamers. And though the number of gamers in Cambodia is growing fast, twitch users have not taken off. Perhaps the community needs to expand more.
YouTube is arguably the top search engine in Cambodia, mainly because it’s much easier to listen to someone explain a topic than to read through pages of text. Additionally, the platform hosts a vast collection of movies and dramas that are subtitled or dubbed in Khmer, making it a go-to source for entertainment and information.
X (formerly Twitter) has also lagged in popularity in Cambodia. Like Instagram, it started as a mobile-only app at a time when smartphones were scarce in 2006. However, with strong activity from western embassies on the platform, some local politicians have now joined the conversation.
